Dear Surrogate, At the outset, we want to say thank you for considering being our surrogate. The creation of a life is miraculous: a fact that we now appreciate on a new level as we’ve begun taking steps to grow our family. The logistics of bringing a child into the world are challenging for any couple who can’t conceive naturally, and we realize that our dreams would remain just dreams if it were not for women like you who are willing to help make them come true. We are very appreciative of your generosity and kindness, and please know that if you are our surrogate you are the key to complete our family and you will be changing our lives. Our names are Laura and Jose. We met 18 years ago, and have been married for the last 2 years. We both have always wanted to have kids, but have been debating the decision between the adoption route and the surrogacy route. We ultimately decided on the surrogacy route after seeing friends struggle with the adoption process. The idea of seeing a bit of each other – our soul mate – in the genetic makeup of our kids has been an important aspect of our decision to choose the surrogacy route as well. It is a bit strange to write a letter to someone we haven’t met, but who will quickly become such an important part of our lives. We imagine it feels a bit like writing to a long lost sister, who we haven’t met yet but who we know exists and that we’ll get to meet soon. We thank our lucky stars that there are women like you who want to help us to complete our family, while at the same time recognizing that asking you for “help” is putting it lightly. We’re more asking you, our surrogate, to join us and become our partner in growing our family. Our baby’s first impressions of the world will come from the initial nine months he or she spends with you, and we are excited to experience the miracle of human development with you. We want to be involved in the pregnancy. We want to be there for the doctor’s appointments. We want to become your friend and get to know you well. We want you to be part of our family and part of the amazing story we tell our child when he or she asks us how we became a family. We are excited to meet you and start the next step of this journey, which will hopefully lead to the moment we will become parents again. And, while we are scared about all the challenges that will entail, we are excited and more than ready for it. We want to give our kids a good upbringing, and teach them to be good people and citizens of the world. We hope to be good role models, and model a strong, loving and healthy relationship which is something that neither of us had consistently while growing up.
