We are Sergio & Simone, an Italian gay couple. We are together since 13 years and we got married in September 2018 under the new Italian law on civil unions. Sergio is 46 and he is a diplomat. He has one daughter Caterina, now 15 years old, from a previous marriage. Simone is 49 and he is an Architect. Thanks to the good relations between Sergio and his ex wife we all live in Rome and we are a “large family”. Sergio is a very social type, goal oriented, practical and very extrovert and outgoing. He likes gym, music, dancing, reading books, travelling and studying languages. Simone is the creative part of the couple, he is very flexible, multicultural lover and passionate of each kind of creativity issue: arts, design, cinema, performance, handcraft. He likes swimming, jogging, traveling and listening to music. We’ve participated in a lot of Italian LGBT rights campaigns, also for the approval of the civil unions in our Country. Sergio, together with some colleagues, was founder of the Italian LGBT Diplomats Association at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote LGBT rights and fight against discrimination at work. We both have a great passion for arts, nature and discovering cultures. As attitude, we are both very social persons and we strongly believe in human relations and in the fact that diversity of all kinds is an enriching factor for humanity.

Being an Italian male gay couple and not being possible to adopt neither as single nor as couple according to Italian law, that’s the only way for us to create a family.

Message from this intended parents

Dear Friend, First of all thank you for reading our presentation. We both have pretty big families and we‘ve been dreaming of having one of our own since long time. We have a strong attitude for parenthood and Caterina herself, since she was a baby, has been asking us to give her a brother or sister. We are members of the Italian LGBT Association and this has been the best way for Caterina to grow up getting acquainted to all kinds of families. After the same-sex civil unions law lately came out in Italy, in September the 1st 2018 we got married, with full joy of Caterina who had been longing for being the groom maid at our marriage. The civil union and the love-is-in-the-air feeling of the whole celebration with all our relatives and best friends has given a further boost to our relation and to our strong will to widening our family. In 2019 we though started planning to join the surrogate process in Canada sharing this choice with our families, friends and colleagues. Everybody’s reaction has been enthusiastic and they are ready to be part of our new family. We have been in Toronto to choose the clinic and the egg donor and we very soon fell in love with the Country, appreciating its people, way of living and approach to diversity. To make our plan easier Sergio has recently applied for a diplomatic or consular post in North America where we are supposed to arrive in the first half of 2020 with Caterina too and stay there for some years. Hoping that you are willing to help us in creating our new family, we would like and we hope that you share our view our relationship to be as most open as possible both during the birth process and also later when the child will be growing up. We want to be transparent with our child, since the very first years finding the proper words and tuning relating to his/her age and tell the true story of his/her birth: how we’ve been longing for having him/her, how we started the surrogacy process, how two women helped us give birth to him/her, how generous they have been in helping us create our family and how wonderful our path to surrogacy in Canada has been from the very first travel till his/her birth. We would like to write a diary of our path with notes and pictures to keep as memory of how he/she was born and to make him/her better understand the process. We want to give him/her the best life we can afford for him/her. Due to our jobs it wouldn’t be that tough to grow him/her travelling all around the world and offering him/her a good life standard. But we deem that being parents is not only about providing the child with anything he/she may need from a “material” point of view, but it’s most of all making him/her feel loved and taken care of every day by the persons who will always love him/her more than themselves.
